Nutti Sámi Siida wins global award

Nutti Sámi Siida in Jukkasjärvi has been crowned the winner of the Indigenous Tourism and Biodiversity Website Award 2010. They were one of 14 nominees, from 10 different countries, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mexico, Micronesia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sweden.

Indigenous Tourism and Biodiversity Website Award 2010 is a collaboration between the UN Secretariat on Biological Diversity, UNEP (CBD) and Planeta.com, supported by the Heidehof Foundation. The award is presented to a company owned by indigenous people whose web site reflects the company's work on ecological sustainability, biodiversity conservation and indigenous peoples’ culture.
 
- Our aim is to spread knowledge about the Sami culture and our way of living in harmony with nature, says Nils Torbjörn Nutti, owner and founder of the company. Even if a guest visits us just for a few hours, we want them to leave with new insights and a thirst for more knowledge. Our guests come from all over the world and we are just overwhelmed by all the praise we have received.

Nutti Sámi Siida AB has worked with Sami tourism since 1997. Owners Nils Torbjorn Nutti and Carina Pingi are both Sami with roots in Saarivuoma and Gabna samebyar. The companys’ activities are based on Sami culture and they tell their story through reindeer- and hiking tours, guided tours, open-air museum with reindeer and buildings from the nomadic period, craft shop and cafe, cultural and culinary events for groups.

On 22 April, Nutti Sámi Siida receives the award at the international fair Reisepavillon in Berlin. Since 1991, Reisepavillon been a global forum for sustainable tourism. A average of 30 000 visitors get a an opportunity to meet ecotourism companies from around the world and participate in seminars on sustainable development. This trade fair is an excellent opportunity for Nutti Sámi Siida to meet with buyers who specialise in ecotourism.
