The origin of this seminar is the art project Magnetite Heavy Art (MHA) – a magnetite sculpture park placed on the shore of the Torne River, created during two weeks in June/July 2007, by 10 specially chosen artists.
The Magnetite Heavy Art project is a collaboration between ICEHOTEL, Kiruna Municipality, Kiruna Magnetit AB, Kristallen i Lannavaara and Minelco AB. It is also the kick off for Kiruna Mineral Center, a longterm project to stimulate development in products and services relating to magnetite, mineral and stone through collaboration between research, business, art and entrepreneurs.
The black magnetite will complement and contrast the snow and ice and become yet another distinguishing feature of Sweden and Norrbotten County.
With innovative ideas, the black ferromagnetic mineral from the mines in Malmfälten, called MagnaDense, can be used in entirely new contexts – in new products, public environments, art installations and in innovative architecture. Focusing on this, the September seminar invites inspiring lectures by architect Anders Wilhelmson from Wilhelmson Arkitekter, speaking about stones, minerals and magnetite in architecture; Minna Rundgren, Nike, speaking about visions with magnetite in clothing; and architect Lars Sundström and the entrepreneur Tuomo Hurrinainen, speaking about magnetite entrepreneurship and about the spectacular
hotel project The Eye.
As an exciting MHA side project, artist Lena Kriström Kulin will sculpt at Norrmalmstorg in Stockholm during the Stockholm sculptor weeks. Her work will be an ensemble with the black and durable magnetite from Malmfälten and the clear, perishable ice from the Torne River.
