The Light Within is an experimental sculpture that explores the human dimension from the point of view that we are all creatures conditioned by the first experience of gestation and birth. Though there is no physical reference made to the womb, the qualities of light and space are present in the sculpture.
It is not the intention for one to feel as though he is back in the womb or to make the association, but simply to feel comfortable in the space and to experience his own thoughts, feelings and inner self.
The Light Within begins as a journey to the ‘egg.’ Situated behind and at a distance from the ICEHOTEL, one must discover the sculpture and that there is a path that leads into it. The narrow path, sufficient for a single file, makes one embark on the journey unaccompanied.
The sculpture itself is composed of nothing but light and space. The space, without any edges, is a soft shell that holds, reflects and at the same time, absorbs the light. The light that enters dematerializes the crystal white surface of the walls.
The meeting point between the two elements gives birth to a surface, neither the wall, neither the light, but a point where both are integrally one. This meeting point, a soft ambiguous surface, constantly changing with the daylight, is the outer shell for the human being to seek refuge within, and experience himself.
Vellachi Ganesan studied architecture and found that her fascination with light was compelling. In search of that, she came to Sweden to pursue her education in Lighting design at KTH and fell in love with both the material and the place. Also an avid photographer and theatrical lighting designer, she finds Light as her central element that inspires and fuels her.
